Until recent years, humankind has always accepted ageing as a natural process that eventually leads to death. But not anymore, these days there are many people have daily routines that include habits or rituals to arrest ageing. In fact, reversing the ageing process has become an industry in itself. There are even folks that are willing to go to extremes not only to fight ageing but even defeat death if possible.
Deepak Chopra, author of “Ageless Body Timeless Mind”, says that a person’s age is a mixture of three different ages which are: chronological (your age on the ID card), biological (the age of your body, as a result of your life experience) and psychological (the age you feel you have). Although one’s actual age cannot be changed, the biological age and psychological age can be influenced by an individual himself.
The state of our body is the indicator of our biological age. In 2005, the Biotechnology and Biological sciences Research Council (BBSRC) presented interesting age-related research findings at Edinburgh International Science Festival which said that an active person in his/her 80s can have the muscle strength of a much younger person with a sedentary lifestyle. Experts from the UK agree that a diet or supplements which are high in amino acids and compound proteins can help improve muscle strength. Considering the fact that after age 40 a person starts to lose between 0.5-2% of his muscles, this finding is certainly welcome news.
Unsurprisingly, exercise is one of the key factors in arresting the ageing process. Exercise stimulates the muscles thereby preventing atrophy. It also encourages the elimination of skin toxins and supportsregular elimination as well. Switching to a healthy lifestyle is another major factor that positively affects how your body responds to ageing. The ideal lifestyle is one in which stress is minimal, a balanced diet is followed, and there is enough time to rest or sleep. Another way in which ageing can be arrested is through the prevention of health problems as well as their early detection and curing. This is particularly true of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Good skin and hair therapy yields positive results.
Lastly a person’s psychological age is largely dependent on his attitude towards what he goes through in his life. We cannot expect a person carrying a lot of negativity to look youthful. If you are always depressed, gloomy and serious you will age faster. You need to need to change your outlook and fight off feelings that cause you to feel down. Smile more. Enjoy yourself. Do not allow yourself to become overwhelmed by your problems no matter how big they are.
In summary, reversing the ageing process means living a healthy and active life, eating a balanced diet and being free from excesses.
